Home Renovation

Home renovation is a process of restructuring or making improvements in your old house. It involves either complete makeover or adding a few things for a better looking house. Most often than not, the homeowners design and implement the changes on their own (Do It Yourself); and sometimes defined by the complexity of the job involved and the budget, contractors are also contacted to accomplish the task. There are many warehouses that not only supply the necessary material for renovation but also help the homeowners with DIY ideas and educate them in handling the complexities of the work. DIY may appear to be palatable idea which also radically cuts down the cost of renovation however it is advisable to go for a professional help when the task requires technical expertise and task-specific artistry.

The general contractor oversees and manages the entire gamut of renovation work ranging from designing to the work of laying down the electric cables, roofing and removing the debris once the task is complete.Home renovation can include anything from mechanical work like wall makeover, that is wall papering, painting walls or installing wooden panels, floor improvement involving new flooring like wood flooring, carpeting etc., roof replacement, upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC), water proofing basements, reducing utility costs with methods like energy-efficient insulation, wood burning stoves, solar panels etc, installing emergency preparedness safety measures etc to decorate the house which includes landscape construction like improvement of lawns, pools, attic etc.

Home improvement can be considered for the economy purpose, making provisions for water storage or installing gadgets that are power efficient or just work efficient like electronic chimney etc. Home remodeling can be simply for comfort reasons too like making arrangements for keeping the house warm in the winters, redesigning in a manner that allows for more sun shine, or making a swimming pool, or gym, or library, or laying gravel in the lawn, recontouring the patio or garden and so on.

The extent to which improvement is carried out defines the type of remodeling, which can be partial improvement when instead of the entire home only a certain sections like just the bedroom(s), living room, kitchen, patio, garden and bathroom are being remodeled or damaged or worn out items are replaced with a new or just repaired. Home renovation infuses new life giving a completely different and better look to the house. This kind of mans desire to combat the ravages of time and taste on the basic lifestyle of man with or without professional guidance come under home renovation.

Installing Standing Seam Roofing - Choosing Metal Roofing Finishes and Hardware

Creating a watertight metal roof, whether a DIY standing seam roofing project, or any other kind of metal roof, can be a far more complex process that initially contemplated - particularly if using pre colored sheeting, where painting over waterproofing is not a viable option. Here are a few of the basics you need to consider to make sure you have a leak proof metal roof.

When undertaking a DIY standing seam roof, or another metal roofing project, investigating these waterproofing tips will certainly offer a roof with a much longer lifespan!

Metal Sheet Fixings

Choosing the right fixing for your new metal roofing is critical. Factors to be considered are the base structure - is it timber or wood? The type of sheeting also plays a role, with regards to the length of fixing, as does the sheet finish - galvanized sheeting requires galvanized screws or nails, while zincalume requires a zincalume screw or nail.

Most important, choose a fixing with a built in cap. These are both weatherproof, being plastic, and help coordinate with color sheeting - the cap being available in a range of colors. DIY standing seam roofing projects in particular can be made much easier by using the right fixings!

Sealant

There are a variety of sealants around, the two major groups being silicone or mastic. Silicone has the benefit of being available in a clear variant, therefore being invisible once applied. Mastic however, often offers a much longer lifespan, since it does not dry out or shrink.

Polyclosures

Polyclosures are die cut polyester foam rubber strips, cut to follow the contour of the sheet profile. Fitted under flashings, and secured with silicone or mastic, they prevent wind driven moisture from entering the roof space under the flashings. Most companies offering wholesale metal roof materials will also offer a specifically designed polyclosure for the profile you choose.

Flashings

Depending of the layout of your roof, you may require any one, or a combination of sidewall, headwall, ridge, hip or apron flashings, or perhaps another specialized flashing altogether. Flashings are generally affixed after the metal roof sheeting is completely laid and trimmed, and affixed using stainless steel or aluminum rivets. These rivets should then be sealed with silicone or mastic. Careful planning when deciding how to install a metal roof will mean that you have all of these, and other accessories on hand, and don't experience any delays!

Where chimneys are fitted lower on a pitched roof, a special flashing is generally manufactured. Called a soaker sheet, they are designed to channel all water that would accumulate behind a chimney around the chimney and off the roof, thereby preventing water from damming up behind chimneys and damaging the metal sheeting.

Laps

Roof sheeting is always laid lengthways, so that the pan, or channels, can divert water off the roof. The sheets always overlap, known as a side lap, usually by one rib. However, on very low pitches, particularly when using a poor water channeller such as corrugated sheeting, double laps (two rib overlaps) may be a good idea.

It is also never a good idea to end lap a sheet. This means to overlap the sheet lengthways with another sheet. While it may save money in the short term, the overlap will almost always be the site of rust, since water will seep between the two sheets and accumulate there. Asking a roofing professional for metal roof installation instructions can certainly help avoid this kind of mistake!

When in doubt with regards to waterproofing accessories for your metal roof, whether a DIY standing seam roofing project, or otherwise, it would be advisable to seek out a roofing professional or sheeting manufacturer for advice. Many offer free advisory, or even estimating services, to help you make the right choices for you roof.

What Are Koi Fish?

Have you ever heard of a Koi fish? A Koi is a descendant of the carp, although the Koi is more colorful than its more common ancestor is. Japanese people bred the Koi some 200 years ago and named the fish Nishikigoi. Some people who see Koi fish have the mistaken belief that a Koi is nothing more than a large goldfish. Actually, goldfish are only distantly related to the Koi.

Koi fish were bred to display and enjoy. What can be better for your personal relaxation and enjoyment than fantastically colored Koi, swimming gracefully in your personally designed water garden which is teeming with colorful and gorgeous aquatic plants.

Not only are Koi fish great for your own personal Koi pond, you can also breed and raise them to compete in Koi shows throughout the world if you wish. Another option is to breed and raise Koi to sell in a commercial enterprise. One Koi can sell for hundreds of dollars. They may very well be worth the time and expense your are willing to expend on them.

Koi are most often found in outdoor fishponds, which are designed to be as gorgeous as the Koi themselves. Many Koi fishponds sport elaborate water gardens that add greatly to the beauty of the surrounding landscape. But the plants do more than add color and variety to the pond. They actually provide protection to the fish from predators such as cats and other prowling carnivores. However, Koi water gardens are of necessity distinct from other outdoor fish water gardens because Koi eat some of the typical plants found therein.

You must know how to care for a Koi pond. Any Koi pond, whether indoor or outdoor, should be sufficiently oxygenated, pH balanced, and filtered with recirculated freshwater to keep the fish healthy. The fish should be fed more often in the summer than in the winter. Once a day is usually sufficient in the winter, but they should be fed twice per day in the summer.

An average sized Koi might grow to be 24 to 36 inches long. Most Koi live 25 or 30 years. However, on rare occasion, a well cared for Koi can live more than 200 years.

You should know many more things about raising Koi for a home fishpond or competition. There is also much to learn before creating a proper Koi pond and water garden. There is insufficient room in this small space to provide all the facts you need for such an enterprise. Check out all available literature so you can raise the healthiest, prettiest Koi fish and keep them in the most exultant pond you can imagine.

Solar Tiles - Solar Power Without the Solar Look

If you're seriously considering the switch to solar power but you're turned off by those bulky, unattractive solar panels that set atop your house like something from a bad outer space movie, then you might want to consider using solar tiles, or shingles, instead.

They look just like tiles on a traditional asphalt roof, plus you will gain the added benefit of harnessing the natural power and energy of the sun. They're easy to install, and while they can be somewhat expensive upfront, they can result in substantial energy savings in the long run.

Roofing systems that use solar tiles incorporate traditional roofing materials such as slate, asphalt, metal, and fiber-cement with the solar tiles. In this way, the appearance is not much different from a regular roof, which makes it aesthetically pleasing.

In effect, you get the benefits of solar energy panels without the unsightly look. They're generally a dark bluish-purple in color, which makes them suitable for most homes. Many types are even compliant with areas that have strict rules regarding historic preservation of local buildings.

But the big question you may have is whether or not solar tiles really work. The answer is, yes! Although one tile by itself doesn't produce a ton of power (roughly between 50 and 200 watts, or about enough to power a small window fan) covering an entire roof can be quite substantial. In fact, an entire roof covered with solar tiles can generate enough power for your entire home.

However, you still will need to maintain ties to the local power company since even the sunniest climates have cloudy days, which limits how much power the tiles can actually generate. Still, the savings in power costs should be huge over a period of time.

As far as the cost, solar tiles are somewhat more expensive than solar panels, but like with just about anything involving solar power these days, there are lots of additional benefits. For example, if you live in a sunny part of the country like Arizona, the tiles may actually produce more power than you actually need. This unused power can be sold back to the local utility company for a credit, resulting in substantial savings.

In addition, the federal government offers generous tax breaks to those homeowners who make use of solar power. If you are looking for ways to cut energy costs, solar tiles could be the answer. To learn more visit solar roof tiles.

XBox 360 Red Circle of Death - Why? And How to Repair It

You are all set to play your favorite game and what do you see but the Xbox 360 red circle of death! Now, I know it is very frustrating, but don't go pulling out your hair or anything! Keep on reading to find that relief is in sight! You CAN repair it easily!

Of course, if your XBox 360 is still under warranty, then by all means, send your XBox to support to have them fix it. Unless you don't feel like waiting 4 weeks for it!

Ok, moving on. One of the main causes of the XBox 360 red circle of death is overheating due to a sub-adequate ventilation system and a lot of heat producing components put into a small area.

To help keep your XBox 360 is good condition and hopefully preventing the problem, place your XBox 360 on a stand by itself with lots of space around it for it to breathe. If you feel the box getting hot, you can try placing a fan near the Xbox and having it provide a constant breeze to help cool the XBox.

Now that you know that a main cause is overheating, you will most likely understand why the towel method is not a very good method to use. You don't want to fry your XBox 360! The towel method is where you wrap your XBox with a towel and let it overheat until the solder inside the XBox starts to melt to that any missed connections are reset. As you can imagine, that temperature can get pretty high.

What I recommend if you are suffering from the XBox 360 red circle of death and your XBox is out of warranty, is to get a good repair guide on this matter. This allows you to repair your own XBox and it can be done in under 2 hours!

If your XBox is still under warranty, I would not recommend these repair guides because opening your Xbox will void your warranty. But if you don't want to wait 4 weeks to get your XBox 360 back, then these repair guides are well worth it. They are safe and it is a permanent fix.

There are numerous guides out there and I have rated the top 5 at my site red-ring-of-death.com.

How Do I Repair My Credit Rating?

Surely, you are aware that your credit rating is very important. A persons credit rating is a score which summarizes a persons ability to handle and pay off credits. A positive credit rating is greatly important for a person to obtain a loan in the future. Working to improve your credit rating is a long, disciplined effort, so if youre asking how do I repair my credit rating?, you should be prepared to stretch your patience. Aside from that, a persons credit rating will also affect the interest rates he will have to pay in case he obtains a loan. Someone who has a low credit rating will most likely be faced with higher interest rates, if only to make up for the higher risk the lender is facing.

Before you try to get a loan, double-check your credit rating or your FICO score. The FICO score, which stands for the Fair Isaac and Co. score is a widely-used credit rating system. The Fair Isaac and Co. is the company that started the credit rating system wherein a persons credit history is evaluated and a person is given a FICO score. Although the FICO score may not be proven to be accurate, a lot of people still think that it is reliable.

How do you repair your credit rating or your FICO score? The first step that needs to be done is to check whether you have a credit report or not. If you do have one, check the information listed on your records and make sure theyre updated and recent information. Your personal background and details will greatly affect your status as a debtor.

After this, try to narrow down your debts as much as you can. Focus your efforts on paying off overdue payments and installments. These are the items that will have the most impact on your credit rating. Another way how you can repair your credit rating is to give your credit card a little breathing space. If you cant avoid using those plastics, just make sure you dont go near your credit limits. Creditors dont just check whether you are able to pay; they also consider your borrowing or spending habits as well.

You can also narrow down the number of your credit cards to just a couple. A long credit list followed by a continuous stream of adding and changing cards to go after the lowest rates that are being offered will not look well on a credit record and will affect your credit rating. So if you want to repair your credit rating, you will need a lot of discipline when it comes to spending, not just paying off debts.

Of course, the best way how you can repair your credit rating is still to avoid any major problems in the first place. For some tips on how to raise your FICO score, you can check the Fair Isaac and Co. website. Also, to maintain a good credit rating, pay your bills on time and work within a specified budget.

Creating A Bathroom Wall Design

Whether you are making a new bathroom or remodeling the existing one, a good wall design should be one of your top priorities. Deciding what materials to be used for your bathroom walls is not an easy task though. You have lots of materials to choose from and virtually endless possibilities of design and pattern combination. The question now is: where to start?

Start by knowing your options for wall design. Tile has long been a popular choice for bathroom wall. It can be made of marble, limestone, vinyl, ceramic porcelain, granite, terrazzo, terra cotta, slate, stone, and glass among others. Take note of the advantages and disadvantages of each and the different effects each type of tile creates to your bathroom.

For example, terra cotta tile achieves a wall that looks weathered and rustic. It is also said to last for lifetime.

Marble tiles, like any other stone tiles must be sealed and require frequent cleaning. But marbles create a unique look when installed on specific areas of the wall.

Glass tiles are best if used as decorative accent but are often expensive and difficult to install.

Vinyl tiles are affordable compared to stone, porcelain, or ceramic. It is easy to install and easy to replace. However, vinyl tiles create several seams that can breed mold, mildew and bacteria. Aesthetic wise, vinyl tiles are not your best option.

Granite is often used as kitchen countertops but it is also good for bathroom wall accent especially if you want highlight a particular wall. Granite is durable and can last for a very long time.

Terrazzo tiles give unique beauty, elegance and longevity. However, it is quite expensive to use as wall design.

Concrete is another option you can take. The material is cheap but installation is not for the do-it-yourselfers. Concrete can be painted with different colors of your choice to match the mood you want to attain to your design.

Choose one or two materials above as the main wall and blend one or two more. The key is blending the right textures, color tones, and shades. For example, you can use natural stones such as marble, granite and limestone together. Glass with marble and limestone can also work.

There is nothing worst than a bathroom with 4 empty walls. Create a wall design according to your preference.

Do-it-yourself Home Improvement

With prices going up, it is important for you to exert your own means for you to be able to carry out home improvement processes by yourself. One of the best method that you can do for you to be able to get do-it-yourself home improvement idea is to search the web for possible tips and techniques that are relatively important for you to carry out the process by yourself.

For you to remain safe, it is important not to create a drastic change right ahead. In choosing colors, its best to opt for neutral color for the wall, you can go for creamy latte for your living room. Avoid dark ones since you can never really be sure about the effects that they bring. Also, try to paint all your trim white to obtain a crisp foundation and in order for the color to come alive. To create a different look, go for your favorite colors so you can put accents.

Furthermore, another do-it-yourself idea is to make a no-sew valance. To do this, you need to cut 1-x-6-inch board which should be a few inches wider compared to the bank of windows and try to cut two 6-inch pieces for the returns. When you are done in the cutting process, screw the returns to the board. After, cut the fabric at least 10 inches in height and the width will depend on your preference. This is the time to position the board beneath the fabric which should be 3 inches from the top hem. When you are done, staple the fabric into the board, and try to fold pleats each 12 to 15 inches. Simply hide the staples through the use of glued on ribbons and you are done with the process.

"Frozen Smoke" and Conservatory Insulation

One of the most searched for items on the Internet recently has been "scientists hail frozen smoke." I was intrigued by the article in The Times that started this frenzy and decided to investigate further as I was researching super insulating materials.

According to The Times "frozen smoke" is, "one of the worlds lightest solids, can withstand a direct blast of 1kg of dynamite and protect against heat from a blowtorch at more than 1,300C."

The company that make the product, Aerogel, do so by extracting water from a silica and then replace it with gas such as carbon dioxide. This creates an extremely light material 99% of which is made up of gas contained in millions of nanopores and although it is classed as a solid the gas gives it a semi-transparent appearance.

Aspen Aerogel are creating an insulated lining for space suits. They believe that a 18mm layer of aerogel will be sufficient to protect astronauts from temperatures as low as -130C.

But getting the stuff into a conservatory at the moment is going to be a bit expensive, although prices will drop in the next few years. Some people have experimented with aerogel insulation and reported big savings in their heating bills. Where space it at a premium, a thin layer of aerogel will outperform traditional insulation blankets.

But it is its potential as a replacement for glass that we are most interested in. A Swedish company are experimenting with producing aerogel glass. This will provide low U-values with the equivalent thermal insulating quality equal to five to ten double glazed units. Unfortunately, at the moment experimental production is currently limited to just 15 square meters a month.

Other benefits of Aerogel Glazing when it does become available will be that; inert gases will not leak from between double or triple glazed units; the glazing at just 12mm thick will be lighter than multiple-glazed units; it will provide better sound insulation; and since no low-e coating will be required, better light transmission.

All this should mean that conservatory blinds and awnings will become a thing of the past, ventilation will be less critical and living with a south-facing conservatory will also be less of a problem.

So we look forward to installing aerogel in a conservatory in a few years.

Path Of Construction - House in a Box

Need a new summer home or home for your in-laws? A Katrina Cottage might be just the thing. Developed in response to one of the worst natural disasters this country has ever seen, these sturdy little go-anywhere homes are now available at the retail level and are providing a range of unexpected alternative housing solutions as far from the Gulf Coast as Minnesota. The good design of these adaptable cottages make them attractive to people looking to develop vacant land, build a modest home or add value to an existing property. Uses include:

- lake front house or mountain home

- place to shack up while building a larger residence or building on undeveloped land

- income generating guest house or rental

- practical in-law house or house for returning children

- student housing

- they also make fabulous green homes for people looking to reduce their environmental footprint.

The concept of buying your home in box isn't new. In 1908, you could buy a house kit out of the Sears cataloge for as little as $107. It's estimated that 100,000 DIY homes were picked out of the cataloge, delivered by train and assembled by eager families between 1908 and 1940 all across America.

All the plans and materials for a Katrina cottage can be had for as little as $30K, but the house requires its own foundation and in most cases - a professional builder. Still, the average cottage can be up in less than two months and some can be up in less than a week. Though some of the award winning designs take up a scant 400 square feet, they're designed for expansion. Over time, the small homes can be added on to.

HEY LITTLE HOUSE - HOW COME YOU LOOK SO GOOD?

Created in response to the need for emergency housing after hurricane Katrina hit the southern United States and the gulf coast, the cottages were meant to supplant the ugly and impermanent FEMA trailers that filled ravaged cities and outlying areas after the storm. More than 200,000 homes suffered major damage and 50,000 homes were obliterated by the storm. Because the devastation was so widespread and the need for housing so great - proponents of the Katrina Cottage movement realized that if speed in rebuilding were the main priority, "revitalizing" the devastated historic communities of the south would leave behind a landscape that lacked style to say the least.

Sparked by discussions at the Mississippi Renewal Forum in 2005, designers quickly got to work on the problem: designing a house that:

- could be built for as little as it costs to provide a FEMA trailer

- could be built quickly

- could stand up to hurricane force winds, earthquakes and other natural disasters

- met all international building codes

- could be delivered as a manufactured house, modular house, kit house, panelized house or as a site built house

- and above all - it had to look good.

The first designs emerged just months after the storm in 2005. In sync with the architectural traditions of Louisiana and Mississippi - the classic details, nine foot ceilings and quaint front porches elevate these mini-homes far above the tin-can ambiance of the FEMA trailers. They can be produced, transported and erected in a timely manner. Easy and cheap to heat, steel framed and concrete lined, they can also withstand almost anything you can throw at them including 140 mph winds and a ton of snow. Combine these qualities with their recent availability online through Lowes stores in the US, and we may be seeing a lot more of these mini-homes in years to come.

How Tough Are Concrete Epoxies

When concrete epoxies first came out I was working on a church remodeling the sanctuary. We were building a set of stairs that was two steps in height and 75 feet long. The steps were going to get a hardwood covering along with the rest of the sanctuary flooring.

I had used redheads in the past and noticed that over time these redheads would loosen up. I could never figure out what caused the redheads to do this. Was it the concrete that was expanding and contracting or was it the steel redheads contracting and expanding.

Either way I can never figure out what was up with the redheads. Another name for a redhead would be an anchor bolt. Red Hed is actually the company's name that makes the anchor bolt used to fasten materials to concrete or masonry surfaces.

Finding out that Simpson building products had made any new epoxy and all it required was drilling a hole 1/16 of an inch larger than the all thread you were going to use . After drilling a hole you would clean it with a plastic brittle brush. This brittle brush was pretty strong but it was not made from metal like I have thought. I was thinking it would have been a nice metal wire brush.

After drilling and cleaning the hole you would insert the proper amount of the epoxy into the hole you had drilled out with a masonry bit. As you slid the cut to size all thread bolt into the hole the epoxy would ooze out of the whole. This would tell you there was enough epoxy in the hole.

After that I cleaned the leftover epoxy off of the wood that I had inserted the all thread into to remove the extra epoxy that had oozed out. I waited 24 hours and the next day came to work with my electric impact wrench and wanted to put this epoxy to the ultimate test.

I put the washer and nut on the all thread and started to torque the heck out of it. As I was tightening the nuts and washer it started to work its way into the wood.

I was simply amazed after 24 hours the epoxy had held that good.

That was then and today Simpson epoxy requires drilling a hole an eighth of an inch oversize and filling it with epoxy. I still can't believe and to this day am a firm believer in concrete epoxies.

Read the instructions, clean out the holes properly with the recommended brush, insert the proper amount of epoxy, and rotate the all thread slowly into the hole as the epoxy starts to ooze out of it. Do not touch or move the bolt for the next 24 hours.

Concrete epoxies are here to stay and will keep improving as time goes on.

Creating the Perfect Home Remodeling Priority List

Home remodeling is one of those projects that can be fun or a pain in the -- you know what. It is best to start your home remodeling plan with one room at a time and decide on the value of each room to prioritize where to save and where to spend. This article will look at the value of each room to help you deiced the type of home remodeling project you may consider.

The big debate on what room is the most used room in the house could go on forever. Some say it is the kitchen others say it is the living room while others say the master bedroom. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and you can use some basic rules to see what the highest priority is for you.

If you have kids then you probably spend more time than you like in the kitchen cooking. If you have a smaller family maybe the kitchen is just a place where you are in and out. If you cook allot then the kitchen should get some very high consideration for your home remodeling project.

Do you like to play games and watch TV? If you find yourself or your family watching television often and you perhaps enjoy family night games then you should place the family room at the top of your list. Maybe it is time to add family room to your home remodeling ideas. Perhaps you could remodel a spare bedroom or add a new room to the house.

Do you have guest spend the night often? You may want to think about making a nice guest bathroom with all the luxuries of a five star hotel for your guest. Do not do this unless you love to have people stay awhile and come often. They are likely to really enjoy visiting you.

When planning your home remodeling ideas you will find that they become much easier with a good priority system. Once you know which rooms are the most important to you and your lifestyle then that is where the money should be spent on nicer upgrades. On rooms that are not high on the list, but still need some fixing you could use less expensive things to fix them up.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs Now!

Complaints regarding bed bugs have risen 50 fold in the last five years according to the National Pest Management Association. Often, an infestation isn't even noticed till they start biting the room occupants.

The bugs are almost immune to normal pesticides. To get rid of them requires a planned approach.

Make Sure That An Actual BedBug Is Identified.

Most often bed bugs are found near where the occupants sleep so that is the place to start your search. Look at the seams and tufts of your mattress for the actual bugs, discarded shells, blood smears from crushed bugs and dark dots that are fecal drops.

Search around the bed frame, behind nearby pictures on the walls, headboards and on and around nearby furniture.

Thoroughly Clean And De-clutter The Area

Once an actual infestation has been identified the area has to be meticulously cleaned. Remove any clutter to limit hiding laces. Bed bugs are extremely small and can hide very easily.

Remove all bedding, wash and dry extra long in high heat. All clothes should be carefully inspected and laundered as needed.

Vacuum The Floor And Furniture

Carefully vacuum the entire carpet or any rugs. Pay special attention along the edges of the walls.

Use a brush to loosen any bugs or eggs from all the carpet, floors, bed frame, nearby furniture, anything on the walls and the mattress and box springs themselves.

If you are concerned about infestation in your mattress or pillows, purchase zip tight covers especially designed to keep new bugs out and seal any current bugs inside where they can't do any more harm. Make sure that whatever you purchase specifically states that it is for containing bedbugs.

Treat The Area

One you have thoroughly cleaned the infested room, treat the room. If you do this yourself, carefully read all instructions before applying anything, especially if you have pets or children.

In most cases, sprays are pretty infective. More effective is powder that adheres to the bed bug when it crawls over it and is designed to get rid of bedbugs by drying out their shell.

The bug is small, no more than 1/4" so make sure to treat any vents, plumbing and electrical openings where they might enter your home.

Retreat The Area

Eggs hatch two weeks after they are laid. They are also even more impervious to any pesticide, so you need to re-clean and re-treat the infested area at least once a week for several weeks to make sure that the bed bug infestation is exterminated.

Getting rid of bed bugs is possible. It just requires some work and determination.

How Building a Cedar Pergola Can Improve Your Backyard

What is the attraction of having a cedar pergola in your garden or backyard? After all, it does not keep out the wind or rain. Or even offer total shade on a hot, sunny day.

It's best to think of a pergola as an airy pavilion. One that defines an open space whether it's for relaxing or entertaining. And, of course, it can be a landscape feature or a structure that links one area of your backyard to another. It is also ideal for growing climbing plants such as vines, roses and wisteria.

Western Red Cedar, softwood, is the perfect building material for pergolas as it

  • blends wonderfully with natural surroundings and the wood has a lovely aroma;
  • is naturally decay resistant;
  • is easy to cut and is resistant to splitting;
  • is light weight. This makes it easy to work with;
  • is free from pitch and resin. This means that you can stain or paint it in the color of your choice;
  • has a fine straight grain;
  • is naturally durable; and
  • is environmentally friendly. Does not require chemical treatment. And it is a sustainably grown wood.

In other words, using cedar wood means that your structure should last for decades.

Building a pergola does not have to break the bank. Forget about buying a kit. That's way too expensive. Instead, purchase a plan and either build it yourself (okay - with the help of a friend as some tasks do require an extra pair of hands!) or hire a local handyman to build it for you. Either way you will save hundreds of dollars. And in a weekend you can have a great addition to your backyard.

Get your plan, instructions and a full list of materials needed to build a pergola.

Patio Furniture Cushions - Just the Thing to Make Your Outdoor Furnishings Comfy

The furniture on your patio is made from wood and it is not as comfortable as you would like it to be. It is only a few years old too, so it would not make sense to go out and purchase something new. Well, you are in luck because a great way to make it more relaxing is by investing in some patio furniture cushions for it.

Sure, this might seem like a quick fix that is too good to be true. However, patio furniture cushions really are the solution to your problem. They feature thick padding that is encased in a soft, plush fabric that offers you one posh place to sit down and take it easy. Just think about it for a second. What would be better? Sitting down on a hard, flat wooden surface or sitting down on a thick, padded cushion. The second option, right, and that is why if you get some for the furnishing that you have outdoors, you will then be giving yourself a pleasant place to unwind.

The nice thing about patio furniture cushions is how there are ones available for pretty much every outdoor furnishing option. For instance, you can purchase one for your Adirondack chairs for both the seat and seat back of the chair. And, if you have a foot rest or ottoman where you like to put your feet up, you can also get one for that foot rest and ottoman as well. There are also selections that are ideal for using with chaise lounges and a slew of other furnishings including settees, porch swings, garden benches, regular patio chairs, and outdoor rocking chairs.

Not only will patio furniture cushions make the furniture in your outdoor space more comfortable, but it is also a great way to add some style to it as well. This is because they are available in all sorts of colors, textures, and patterns, creating eye-catching choices that will definitely add to the overall look of your outdoor space. For example, if you think that your outdoor space is kind of on the boring side, you can easily breathe some life into it with ones that are vibrant colors like red, orange, or yellow. A patterned option would also be a great choice here too. Or, if you want something that is a little more subtle, yet still pleasing to the eye, you could go with a textured option that is a beautiful taupe or antique beige color.

Thinking that patio furniture cushions are something that you want to look into purchasing? If you said yes to that question, then a great way for you to check out all those options is by simply going on the Internet for some online comparison shopping. This seriously is the route to go since you do not have to step one foot out of your home to do it and what you buy will then be sent right to you. Home Remodeling Stair Lighting Help

Walking up and down the stairs in the dark could become a safety issue. If the stairs in the house are not that old, there should be a light switch at the top and a light switch at the bottom of the stairway. This is a three way switch and is designed to allow you to turn the stair lighting on as you walk up the stairs and then turn the stair lighting off, once you've safely reached the top of the stairway. And vice versa as she walked down the stairs.

If you don't have a light switch, there are motion sensor lights that are battery operated and can be installed easily in the stairway. These lights can provide you with peace of mind, while protecting your family from accidents.

Stairway accidents are nothing to joke about, I lived in a two-story house with four other people and was the last one to fall down the stairway. None of us got seriously injured and the stairway was built to meet local building codes and was inspected by a building and safety inspector. The stairs were built correctly and the stair lighting was no problem, but people still fell down the stairway and it always happens in the evening.

During the day time there were two windows that let plenty of light into the stairway and in the evening the stairway became quite dark, rarely was the stair lightning ever turned on. This could have been outright laziness but nevertheless, it was rarely used and eventually became a safety issue.

Lighting your stairway might not end all of your problems but it can and some of your problems. There are plenty of stair lighting systems available on the market today and some of the battery operated stair lighting systems can be installed by most homeowners.

Think safety always and do your best to solve your stair lighting problems as soon as possible to prevent injuries or accidents.

Planning Your Bathroom Remodel Budget - Home Improvement Ideas

As a bathroom remodeling contractor, I get calls from people, that have no idea what they want or how much anything is going to cost. Here's some simple tips that can be very helpful when planning a bathroom remodel budget.

Bathroom Remodeling Investment

In 2008, the average mid-range bathroom cost around $16,000 and you could recoup around $12,000 of your original investment upon the sale of your home. According to a popular remodeling magazine, larger bathrooms using expensive fixtures, tile, bathtubs, woodworking, toilets and showers had an average of $52,000. Upon the sale of a home, you could recoup around $36,000 of your original investment.

Finding out How Much Things Cost

My first suggestion, would be to visit your local home improvement center, lumber yard or plumbing supply warehouse. Larger stores like Home Depot and Lowe's, seemed to provide you with value pricing but don't have a large selection. While doing some research on the Internet I noticed that some of their pricing is outrageously, outrageous. Some plumbing supply warehouses can provide value but beware others won't.

Create a List of Bathroom Remodeling Parts

You can get a good idea of your bathroom remodel costs for your budget by making a list of bathroom parts with pricing and then adding them up for a grand total. If you're a total bathroom remodel budget is $15,000 and you have a $6,000 bathtub with $4000 worth of tile, you could have a budget problem.

Figuring out the Labor

You will have to contact a contractor to get an actual cost for the labor. Sometimes you can double the cost of your bathroom remodeling parts to get a rough idea. If you have a list or a couple of lists and a few pictures of some sample bathrooms, this will make the contractor's job easier and often they can give you a labor price within a few days.

Give Yourself a Cushion

I would suggest leaving yourself a small financial cushion for any additional remodeling items. For example, you could see a different toilet, or instead of painting the walls, you now choose to wallpaper, you could incur additional expenses that you haven't planned for. If you know exactly what you want and stick to the original bathroom remodeling plan, you shouldn't need the cushion.

Financial problems often transfer into construction problems, so spend some time figuring out, how much money you want to spend on the bathroom remodel and try not to go overboard on the budget. I hate to see homeowners struggling with home improvement loan payments. Try to create a bathroom remodeling budget that is realistic and will not create a financial burden upon you or your family.

Do-It-Yourself Kitchen Design

Remodeling the kitchen has become one of the most popular projects that home owners undertake to improve their home. One of the reasons is that, along with bathrooms, redoing a kitchen has the highest return on investment of any home improvement project. There are many parts of a remodeled kitchen that a home owner can manage themselves. All it takes is a little research and a little knowledge. However, although hiring an independent contractor is risky and expensive, there are some things best left to a professional.

What You Should Leave To The Pros

There are some parts of remodeling a kitchen that are NOT recommended for the DIYer. One main component is any electrical work. Not only is electrical work difficult and dangerous, improper wiring can lead to fires and can damage expensive appliances. You also risk voiding the warranty on many electrical items if they are not completed by a certified electrician. Be sure and see your warranty for details. Planning with electricity is simply not for the amateur, not even for a contractor who is not a certified, licensed electrician. This isn't to say that your general contractor or even you cannot handle the job. In many cases the work is not really that difficult. It just simply isn't worth the risk and liability involved.

While some plumbing can be easily tackled by an amateur, such as replacing an existing faucet, rough-in plumbing should also be handled by a professional. If you are relocating a sink or adding a dishwasher, soldering of the pipes may be required. This task is technically difficult and potentially dangerous. Incorrect soldering can even lead to a fire. Working with installing or replacing PVC pipe is also tricky business. If not installed correctly, you could have potential leaks that can cause significant damage as well as costly repairs.

Most other jobs that will be required in a kitchen remodel are easy enough to handle yourself. Even difficult installations such as cabinetry can be tackled by the do-it-yourselfer who is motivated and educated. Hiring a contractor is going to cost you at LEAST as much in labor as you plan to spend on materials, and quite possibly more. Do some research, take your time, and you can actually enjoy creating a new kitchen by yourself.

Square Bathtubs Make a Design Statement

There are so many different styles of bathtub on the market that it can sometimes seem impossible to make a choice. However, one style that is often forgotten about, or even barely considered at all, is the square bathtub. In this article we'll take a look at why a square bathtub can be a good choice and a few considerations that need to be borne in mind when choosing one.

One of the first things to understand is that a square bathtub can be a really good soaking tub. Many of these are very deep and therefore you can sit in hot water right up to the neck, something which is a really great thing to look forward to after a hard day at work. There is something very therapeutic about hot water, and using it for relaxation is one of the best things you can do.

If you do decide to choose a very deep bathtub you will usually find that this style is quite compact as well, which means it will also save space in your bathroom. The good thing about this is that it will give you more room to change the design in other areas, something which can only be a good thing. It will also give you more space to fit things such as shelves in order to store the bathroom essentials.

Combined with the compact style is the square bathtub that can fit in the corner, something which can also save you space, but which will also add a really nice design element to the bathroom. There is something great about having something with very clean lines since it really does make the whole room look clean and uncluttered. Square bathtubs really can help you in this aspect.

These considerations are just a few of the things you need to bear in mind when buying the square bathtub, but by taking them in mind when you do choose you really will not go far wrong.

Motorized Shades - Primary Benefits

1. Convenience. Raising and lowering a manual shade is easy enough if it is not too big. But if the shade is very large or there are 2, 3, 4 or more shades then it becomes more difficult and more time consuming. The convenience factors of motorized shades are important for several other reasons listed below.

a. Maximizing Views. Having motorized shades mean the difference between seeing a beautiful sunrise/sunset or missing it. Stunning vistas are rarely missed when opening or closing shades is as simple as pressing a button.

b. Security. Motorized shades can easily be set on a timer so that when guests are away from home for an extended period of time, shades are raised and lowered at various preset times. This gives the impression that someone is living in the house which deters would be thieves.

c. Conserving Energy. The heat gain from sunlight through windows during summer months is a major burden on air conditioning. The convenience of motorized shades makes saving energy much simpler. Preset timers obviate the need to remember to raise or lower shades for energy saving purposes.

d. Protecting Furniture, artwork and flooring. The sun's rays can do damage to interior furnishings, causing fading, cracking or warping. The convenience of motorized shades makes protecting furniture, artwork and flooring much simpler. Preset timers are also useful in this regard.

e. Many Windows and/or Large Windows. As the number and size of windows increases, the case for motorization becomes increasingly compelling. Some walls of windows are 20, 30 or even 60 feet in length which makes motorization a practical necessity.

f. Hard to reach windows. These skylight windows, second story openings or windows blocked by furniture or other obstructions are why motorized shades were first conceived. Obviously, these factors are still relevant today.

2. Child Safety. A shocking number of injuries and deaths result each year due to cords from manual window shades. The window shade industry's "Child Safety Month" is intended to address these hazards with safety clips and consumer awareness. The best solution is no cords at all, which is possible with motorized shades.

3. Unsightly Cords. Aesthetically, cords detract from the clean look of a window opening. Multiple shades mean multiple cords, pooling on the floor when fully open. Motorized window shades means no more unsightly control cords and open, clear views through windows.

4. Less Wear and Tear. Tangling and unfamiliar 'user abuse' to shades are the most common causes of service calls. The control mechanisms on manual shades, if used frequently (see convenience factor above), will break and can be costly to repair or replace.

5. They are cool! Functionally, motorized shades make a lot of sense and aesthetically, they are definitely preferable to manual shades. Let's not forget that they also have an impressive WOW Factor!

Handy Man Talents - Remodeling Tips

Do you pride your self as a competent handy man? Lets face it, there are many women who just love guys who can turn their hand to just about anything around the house. But it's not enough to be "just" a handy man, to be a well rounded in demand handy man you need to develop many different sets of skills.

Some people just like to do small handy jobs using timber, perhaps doing repairs to door jambs - window sashes & frames or repair a few rotten floorboards, and believe it or not the vast army of people working as handy men never seem to run out of work.

Perhaps instead of promoting your services as an all round handy man, you could specialise and concentrate your skills in certain areas, such as woodwork repair - fence repairs - household utensil repairs - garden furniture repairs - garden equipment & tool repair, there is an almost endless list that could be compiled in the general handy man arena.

But just imagine if you made a special effort and went a little further
than the average handy man does with his skills, and included special metal craft skills that placed you into a position that few other people were able to offer in your area, now wouldn't that give you a competitive advantage.

Tools - equipment & other things break all of the time around a house, the simple solution is to simply throw broken items out, and that is what most people do, and one of the major reasons why so much stuff ends up in landfill refuse dumps. Many of these broken items could easily be repaired and put back into service once more, people will save money and landfills will end up with a lot less material & things being dumped.

Metal repair skills are not difficult to learn, many trade colleges offer short courses on equipment - tool maintenance & repairs. If you are an enterprising handy man there's a good chance you already have the right kind of skills to succeed. You don't need a large inventory of tools either, a mid size electric arc welder, a sturdy bench fitted with a 4" vice, plus a hacksaw, a pedestal drill press and several other metal working tools and you are ready to go.

The piece De resistance of metal craft skills is when you have learnt and understand the art of metal casting, this is where you melt aluminium or bronze and pour the metal into a pre-made sand mould. Almost any shape can be made, castings made in the hobby workshop can range in weight from 1oz to several pounds or KG. All kinds of knobs, handles, levers, rods and flat shapes such as nameplates and plaques can be made with some practice.

There is an acute world wide shortage of people with practical skills and
know how to rebuild - repair and maintain, perhaps this is the kind of work that you would like to do either full time or part time. You only have to look in the newspaper classifieds to see that many people make a reasonable living rebuilding and repairing all manner of things.

Solar Post Cap Lights - An Important Part of Deck Design

When choosing a deck for your house, you'll be looking at all aspects of deck design, including levels, styles, materials, and overall, cost. Once you've chosen your deck design, the materials you want (wood or PVC), it's up to the creative side of you to create the finishing touches that can really 'make' the deck. One of the best ways to do that is with the use of solar post cap lights.

Support posts are necessary to hold up the structure of the deck and the stairs, but they are often very plain looking and don't add much to the design aesthetics of the deck. Adding solar post cap lights can create an interesting accent light that is not to intrusive, but illuminates just enough of the deck to make it usable at night.

Solar post cap lights are very simple in their operation. During the day, sunlight collects on a solar collector panel, which turns it into usable electricity, which is stored in the internal rechargeable battery. A photo sensitive sensor in the top of he unit 'sees' the sunlight, and knows when to turn the light on and off. As long as they get plenty of sunlight during the day, your solar post cap lights will continue to provide hours and hours of gentle nighttime illumination.

With standard lighting options, you would have to hire an electrician to install outdoor power outlets and run electric lines from your house to each light. The electrician may even have to add a new circuit to your fuse box. All that work can get expensive and in the way. Solar post cap lights eliminate the need to run wires everywhere. Since they don't run off of grid electricity, they can save you money on your electric bill as well.

Improve Your Home's Value by Building a Home Workshop

Many people have their workshop in an unused corner of their garage or the basement or some other out-of-the-way area. This can prove to be problematic, if the space is needed for other things or if there isn't enough room to really spread out one's projects or tools. Building a workshop can solve these problems and also add to your home's value if it is planned out properly.

There are a lot of plans and instructions out on the Internet and provided by hardware supply companies and there is really no limit to the kind of structure one can build, provided that the rules and laws governing one's property are adhered to. It's a good idea to get a copy of your area's zoning laws to find out if you need a permit to build the workshop you're planning on. Also, homes governed by a home or neighborhood association may be limited as to the kind of structures they can build and owners may need permission to build at all.

The plans you choose for your workshop should allow for the inclusion of electricity. Again, there are many resources on this, so I need not enumerate the how-to's of this. The important thing is that you ensure that the electricity running out to your shop is treated as seriously as that running inside your house - it must be grounded and up to code. When in doubt, get competent professionals to install and/or inspect it. Installations of heating/cooling appliances can further make your workshop more comfortable and valuable.

There are many alternative energy generators that are on the market right now. You have the option to augment your power with electricity generated from solar panels or wind turbines. The Internet can show you a great many alternative energy generators if you want to lessen your electricity bill and also take less power from the grid that you share with the people in your community.

Try to build to complement your home. If your home is a 1906 heritage house, try to avoid installing a fire-engine-red steel structure. Instead, go for a building that reflects your home's outward appearance and decor. Acquire paint and trim that matches your home, so that the home and shop present a unified appearance. This helps the shop blend in better with the property. If, for some reason you can't or won't match your home, paint your shop a neutral color or one that complements your home's color. Avoid an appearance that is completely different from your home's; it produces a jarring note that could be easily avoided.

When building, make sure you allow for plenty of storage space and organization. The cleaner your workshop can be kept, the easier it will be to use for you and the better it will look to a potential buyer. Shelves, drawers and hooks are all excellent built-in additions to consider. Also, consider where you are going to put your waste, how you plan to sort recyclables from non-recyclables and allow for the space that this will need.

A home workshop can, with attention to its placement and appearance, add to your home's value by placing a sought-after structure on the property. A home workshop is something that many people are looking for, which can make your home more attractive should you wish to sell in the future. Paying attention to what may attract or repel future buyers is worth it if you want your workshop to increase your home's selling power on the market.

Green Building Market Potential - How Green Can You Go?

A recent joint study released by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and McGraw-Hill Construction has discovered that some 85% of homeowners who currently own green homes are happier with their new homes than with their previous houses--and those green homeowners are eager to share their experiences with others.

Even though the percentage of American homes that are truly green is still very small (some .3%), the study hints at the enormous potential of the green building market. As with all segments of the American economy, demand triggers supply, and builders seem to be responding to the ever-increasing demand by homebuyers for more energy efficient housing. That trend is reflected in the fact that nearly 2% of all residential housing built last year included at least one green building element, even if it only involved the installation of energy-efficient appliances.

However, the study also found that builders are beginning to move away from simple elements like green appliances and moving toward a more holistic approach toward green building. Such an approach considers all the factors that could be built into an "ideal" green home and allows homeowners to be involved in picking and choosing how green they want their home to be, given their financial situation and commitment to energy efficiency.

Happy Green Homeowners

Owners of green homes aren't afraid to share their enthusiasm with others. They're so happy, as a rule, that they're eager to tell friends, family, and associates about their positive experiences, and as any marketing person will attest, word-of-mouth is the most powerful form of advertising. That has certainly proved to be the case with green home buyers, since full 28% of all new buyers said that they first heard about the concept of green homes by word-of-mouth. As time goes by, that good PR, spread by enthusiastic homeowners, will begin to translate into an explosion of green building as the good news begins to spread exponentially, according to the study.

It will ultimately prove to be a win/win proposition for everyone. Home owners will benefit from lower utility bills, the homes will require less planetary resources to maintain, and the price of green building will go down as more suppliers begin to provide products to meet the demand for more energy efficient construction. It's an exciting development, and bodes well for the entire industry--as well as for the Planet Earth itself. What could be better than that?

Structural Framing Beams

Let's start with the beams. They can be Glulam, Parallam, Microlam or even wood beams. What are all of these and why do I need them in my house. The beams are used to hold up parts of the house and are located in your walls, roofs and floors. Beams are used to transfer a load from one point to another.

Structural framing beams allow the architect to create large openings, floors and roofs in your house. The beams are also used to support the weight over the doors, windows and other openings in your home. These beams support massive amounts of weight in some cases and are even made of steel if needed.

Another growing problem is the lack of old growth trees in the forest. If we just used wood beams with out using the new engineered beams we would have to cut down a lot more of the bigger trees. So you can add these guys to your Christmas list. The lumber or wood engineers have come up with all sorts of alternatives for new building products. These new beams are just some of them. Keep up the good work guys...

Glulam is a engineered wood product comprised of wood laminations, or 2 x 4s that are bonded together with strong, waterproof adhesives. If you use a Glulam beam on the buildings exterior you will have to order a exterior Glulam beam. In this case the manufacture will use special exterior rated glues for the beam.

When ordering any wood engineered beams specify to the lumber yard what you are using the beam for. Exterior or Interior of the building. If you use a interior glulam over time there is a good chance of the beam delaminating or cracking apart.

Parallam is made from almost all of the wood on the log using veneer strands that are aligned parallel for maximum strength. The end product is a rectangular beam; which is longer, thicker, and stronger than solid-sawn lumber. They are often used as beams, headers, columns, and posts, among others uses.

Microllam is an engineered wood product that uses multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives. It offers several advantages over typical milled lumber: it is stronger, straighter, and more uniform. It is much less likely than conventional lumber to warp, twist, bow, or shrink due to its composite nature. Made in a factory under controlled specifications, Microllam products allow users to reduce the onsite labor. They are typically used for headers, beams, rim board, and edge-forming material.

These beams come in all sorts of different lengths, widths and heights. They are engineered to hold amazing amounts of weight. They really are great engineering marvels.

Tip: I have had to replace almost all of these types of beams over the years due to some form of damage. Like anything else in your home if it is used improperly there is a good chance your are going to have some sort of failure. I have seen people add weight to these structural beams with no thought of them ever failing.

If you are planning on building a room addition, rebuilding your roof, adding a floor or any other type of construction where you are adding a addition load to your house. You might want to consult with a building contractor or structural engineer.

Causes of Structural Failure

Why Does Wood Crack When it Dries?

Differential Shrinkage - To get right to the point, wood cracks due to differential shrinkage! Differential shrinkage occurs because the outer fibers in the shell dry first and begin to shrink. However, the core has not yet begun to dry and shrink, and consequently the shell is restrained from shrinking by the core. Thus the shell goes into tension and the core into compression. With the stresses from the shell and core pulling in opposite directions the wood fibers break and a crack forms. The larger the wood member, the more stress is exerted to the wood member. Examples Lets take an example of a 1x8 board versus an 8x8 timber

  • The 1x8 board is only one-inch thick so it dries fairly quickly. The stress are minimal and just a few, small surface checks may result.
  • The much larger 8x8 (8-inches x 8-inches) timber takes a long time to dry which could be as much as six-months. The inside of the timber will stay wet for months while the outside is dried to well below 20-percent moisture content. The stress that is set up within the 8x8 will eventually result in a inch crack or larger on one face to the timber. This crack will go all the way to the center of the timber and usually be on one face only.

I have seen people cutting a round, lilly pad from the end of a log so that they can use it as a cutting board in the kitchen. It looks nice in the green, unseasoned state but after a few weeks it develops a large, pie crack in the piece. It is eventually discarded as unsightly. After throwing it away they wonder what happened to the wood that allowed this to happen.

This is just another reason why wood materials should be properly dried before using them in any mode other than for exterior use such as fence posts, landscape timbers or a rough fence. If they are being used where their final moisture content will be 15% or lower, they should be dried prior to milling and installed into their final end use. In this way the seasoning, stress cracks can be aligned in such a way that they are hidden or discarded. Preventing Cracks Proper drying techniques and PEG What can be done to prevent this seasoning degradation in wood? With large quantities of lumber, boards to timbers one can only resort to proper drying following the many details that make up the complete process. This can be done with either a kiln or by air drying but many details have to be followed to have the results desired. It is not the purpose of this short subject to outline what must be done to properly dry wood. This will be covered in another article.

For small, fairly expensive items such as carvings, another method can be used to prevent degradation due to seasoning checks and cracks. This is done using a chemical called polyethylene glycol-1000 or PEG for short. This material looks like a block of paraffin in the solid state but will dissolve in water. The correct method for using this material is to soak the newly carved piece of wood in water for a month or more depending on its size. After it is completely saturated with water it is placed in a solution of PEG and water. It is kept in this solution for several months for best results. The solution should be warm and can be kept this way with a fish bowl heater. After the carving is thoroughly saturated with PEG, it must be dried slowly in a cool environment and out of the sunlight. The result is a wood carving that will not shrink when it dries and thus will not crack.

The physical explanation for the above process is this: PEG can only be transmitted through the wood if the wood is thoroughly saturated with water. When the PEG enters the cells, it fills the cell walls and the cell lumen located in the center of the cell. When the wood is dried, it cannot shrink because the cell walls are now filled with a solid (PEG) and cannot shrink. If the wood cannot shrink, it cannot crack or split! As a final note, I used this method on a piece of sycamore that was buried in a clay pit for nearly 6,000 years. I had it made into a gun stock and after 30 years of use the gun stock looks like new without the slightest hair line crack in any surface of it.

Bathroom Design Ideas to Maximize Small Bathroom Layouts

When you are planning to remodel or renovate your bathroom and maximize its feel and over-all look, here are some suggestions in maximizing your whole bathroom layout.

Install frameless shower doors if your budget includes a new shower. A pivot hinge will minimize the shower door swing, which also eliminates the need for a larger clearance.

  1. Think about putting in a pocket door. This will do away with the call for any door clearance, which is usually a thirty degree wide arc.
  2. Get rid of linen closets if those are not useful. You can substitute the shelf space with hanging wall cabinets.
  3. Get rid of the partition walls. These partition walls are commonly seen in much older homes, and they are just space eating items that originated from a design era where the partition were used to separate rooms and create smaller areas.
  4. The recessed lights should be positioned next to the vanity mirror in order to illuminate the room brightly.
  5. Get rid of all the clutter. Uncluttered rooms make a space appear more open and larger.
  6. Go for cool paint palette, like the neutrals, pastels or variants of whites to provide the delusion of open space; put in more color by adding accessories, like the fixtures and towels. Make sure they go with the color scheme of the bathroom.
  7. Add mirrors, it can make the room seems bigger.
  8. Prefer wall mounted vanities than custom made cabinets since the latter will cost more. Plus, wall mounted sinks or corner vanity cabinets are space savers but very stylish as well.

Bathroom Decorating Ideas

If you're like most of us, the most difficult rooms in the house to decorate nicely seems to be the bathroom. This is especially true when you have a large family and your kids are still small. Things just seem to be messy and disorganized more often than not.

It's not too difficult to decorate this area though. You probably don't want to go all out with an ornate decorating theme and make your bathroom look like a showcase... at least not until the kids are grown... but there are several things you can do now that will really spruce things up.

1. Put in matching bathroom accessories. Technically these don't have to match completely, they just need to compliment each other somehow. And by accessories, I mean things such as a soap dish, trash container, towel holder, and toothbrush holder. You can even add mirrors and wall shelves if you'd like, but just putting in new soap dishes and towel holders often makes a drastic difference in the look of your bathroom. Don't forget the toilet paper roll holder too, having a nice looking one really adds a finished, polished look to your bathroom decorating theme.

Bonus Tip: If you buy accessories in a solid, natural material you'll have more versatility with your color scheme. Buying wood or brass accessories for instance, makes it easy to have multiple decorating themes to switch around with throughout the year, without having to change all the accessories each time.

2. Get some new towels and washcloths. These should either be a matching set, or individual ones that compliment each other too. And they need to tie in somehow with the new accessories you've put in.

If you've gone with the flexibility of wood, brass, or other universal accessories, your towels and washcloths can be virtually any color - or color combination - you'd like.

You don't have to buy tons of towels and washcloths at once either. In fact, you can start with just one or two of each to use for display on your pretty, coordinated towel rack. You're going for a decorating theme here, so making things pretty is a large part of the goal. If you're able to buy multiple towels - or even entire sets at once, this will make you feel as if your new decorating theme is more complete. But it's not required to start with, just buy enough to put on display if you're short on money.

Also: Don't forget the hand towels. These add a bit of polish and upscale elegance to any bathroom, particularly when they're on display.

3. Put some potpourri or fake flowers around. These small touches are easy and inexpensive, but they really give your bathroom a more professionally decorated look. Pile a bit of potpourri into an extra soap dish that matches or compliments your other accessories, or lay flowers and greenery on a shelf beside a fluffy stack of towels. You can even weave greenery around various bottles that are on display in your bathroom, or around containers holding cotton balls and swabs too.

4. Put in a small area or throw rug. Even a tiny bathroom can use a rug... they're almost always functional, and they can be quite pretty too. It's a good idea to make sure the rug you choose is made of absorbent materials... particularly if you plan to place it in front of the bathtub or shower. If your bathroom is large enough, consider putting down several rugs. I personally prefer to have one in front of the toilet because the floor is cold, and one in front of the tub and shower too. You can also simply put the rug in the middle of the room as an accent piece.

When choosing rugs for your bathroom, be sure they match or compliment the color scheme somehow. If you're primary color in the bathroom is sky blue but you have small amounts of midnight blue mixed into other things, it's ok to choose a midnight blue rug. It's even ok to choose a cream colored rug even if nothing else in your bathroom is cream colored - just make sure there's a small amount of the sky or midnight blue in the rug and it'll tie into the decorating theme almost automatically.

An Introduction to Awnings

Awnings come in a variety of colors, styles and functions. You can find traditional retractable awnings, awnings for residential homes and even sleek and modern designed awnings. Awnings can serve as a way for a business to advertise locally, to provide shelter from heat or cold for energy efficiency, to simply make a home more beautiful, or a combination of all of these. Awnings have begun to gain more and more in popularity over the past decade or so, with many homeowners recognizing the benefits of having an awning installed.

Placing an awning over a window, terrace or balcony can add beauty and value to a home. Awnings can add curb appeal to nearly every home without blocking views from the windows. Awnings are even great for patios, decks and doorways. You can choose from either stationary or retractable awnings; whatever meets your design and efficiency needs.

Many people enjoy having awnings installed on their decks and patios. One of the most popular types of awnings to install in these places is the retractable awning. On hot days, the retractable awning can be opened to provide shade for those sitting outside as well as for the home itself; blocking out most of the direct sunlight from windows and doors can yield tremendous savings on utility costs.

Thousands of awning companies are doing business across the country. Because the competition is fierce, you can get great deals on multiple awnings or even deep discounts on a single awning. You can call around to local installers to find out what their specials are and compare the savings around town. Simply stated, awnings can make a wonderful addition to nearly any home and in many cases can increase the overall value of the home.

Awnings Info provides detailed information about retractable, canvas, window, RV, patio, aluminum, deck, and commercial awnings. Awnings Info is the sister site of Gazebos Web.
